How to choose electric underfloor heating: a guide for apartments and homes

Electric underfloor heating provides year-round comfort and independence from central heating. In this article, we'll discuss how to choose a system for your room and flooring.

Types of electric underfloor heating

There are two main solutions: heating cable and heating mat. The cable is laid in the screed and is suitable for new renovations and large areas. The mat is a thin cable on a mesh; it is convenient to lay it directly into the tile adhesive layer under the tiles without raising the floor level.

What kind of flooring

  • For tiles and porcelain stoneware — cable in screed or mat. Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and hallways.
  • In screed — heating cable as primary or secondary heating.
  • Under laminate and parquet — systems with reduced temperature and a precise thermostat.

How to calculate power

For supplementary heating, 100–150 W/m² of heated area is used; for primary heating, 150–180 W/m². The heated area is the free floor space without furniture and plumbing.

Primary or supplementary heating

As supplementary heating, underfloor heating creates comfort during the off-season and in the bathroom when central heating is off. As primary heating, it works in apartments and houses with good thermal insulation: with sufficient cable power and quality insulation, a DEVI floor can fully heat a room without radiators.

Don't forget the thermostat

A thermostat is an essential part of the system. It maintains the temperature and saves up to 20% of electricity. You can choose a model in the Thermostats section.
